Morocco’s smartphone market is buzzing with debate as new measures in the 2026 Finance Law reshape import rules, raising expectations of lower prices for consumers.
The government recently approved a sharp cut in import duties on smartphones and similar wireless devices, reducing the rate from 17.5 percent to 2.5 percent. The amendment, adopted by Parliament’s finance committee in early December, has fueled speculation about imminent price drops.
Some retailers have already advertised upcoming discounts, but industry professionals urge caution. Sellers note that phones imported in 2025 are still being sold, limiting immediate price changes.
Youssef, a smartphone dealer in Rabat, said the impact will be gradual, becoming visible only after older stock is cleared. He expects noticeable reductions in the coming months, varying by brand and specifications.
Professionals also link the measure to efforts to curb undeclared phone sales and encourage legal imports, while supporting wider internet access and digital services. Most agree that meaningful price cuts, starting around 200 dirhams, are likely later in 2026 rather than immediately.
