Nigeria’s Kano State Government said Sunday it is targeting over USD 10 billion in investments from Morocco within five years, with a focus on renewable energy and solid minerals, Nigeria’s outlet News Central reported.
The announcement follows a trade and investment mission to Morocco led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. His spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, said several MoUs will soon be signed between Kano and key Moroccan institutions.
The agreements will span renewable energy, agriculture, and commerce — sectors flagged as priorities in Kano’s economic recovery strategy.
In Morocco, the governor’s delegation held meetings with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), OCP Africa, and the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce.
Dawakin-Tofa said the deals will involve investment sourcing, innovative finance models, and energy storage technology to serve Kano’s industrial sector.
He confirmed that the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce had expressed strong interest in working with Kano on energy and mining. “The partnership is expected to boost the state’s economy and contribute to the projection of attracting up to USD 10 billion in investments over the next five years,” he said.
Talks with OCP Africa, a major player in fertilizer production, focused on setting up fertilizer blending plants, modernizing agriculture supply chains, and launching tech-backed support for small farmers.
The mission also marked the start of a partnership with MASEN, operator of the 500-megawatt Noor solar complex in Ouarzazate.
Dawakin-Tofa said MASEN had pledged to support Kano’s Light-Up Kano Initiative, which aims to generate 2,000 megawatts of solar energy in five years.
