A Gaza-bound aid ship, Conscience, caught fire and issued a distress call early Friday after what activists described as a drone attack in international waters off Malta.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which aims to end Israel’s Gaza blockade, said 16 people,12 crew and four passengers, were aboard when the alleged strike occurred.
Customs data showed the vessel, under a Palau flag, had anchored off Malta for 12 hours before the incident.
Maltese authorities confirmed a fire, later extinguished, and reported no injuries. Activists claimed the ship was targeted twice, with explosions damaging its generators and creating a hole that risks sinking if moved.
The FFC blamed Israel, though no evidence was provided. A tugboat assisted firefighting, but activists refused evacuation, vowing to continue their mission to break the blockade.
