As Morocco prepares to host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time ever this October, the country’s head coach, Anwar Mghinia, says his team of teenagers is ready to rise to the occasion on its home turf.
“We will prepare properly to shine at home and in front of our fans,” Mghinia said confidently on Wednesday, following the official group-stage draw held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex near the capital, Rabat.
The draw placed Morocco, the host nation, in a challenging group alongside Brazil, Italy, and Costa Rica, three experienced football nations. The grouping has been dubbed locally as the “group of death,” a term often used to describe a group in which all teams are strong and the competition is especially fierce.
“This is a World Cup. You expect to face the best,” he said. “We’ll adapt our training and schedule friendly matches based on the style and strengths of our group opponents.”
The 2025 tournament will be the largest in U-17 Women’s World Cup history, featuring 24 teams instead of the usual 16. It runs from October 17 to November 8 across cities in Morocco.
In a major vote of confidence from FIFA, Morocco has also been selected to host the next four editions of the tournament, through 2029.
The Moroccan squad’s coach explained that his team will approach the competition with optimism, not pressure. “We’ll take it one game at a time. Our players are excited, not afraid,” Mghinia said. “Playing at home is a source of pride.”
While noting the unique challenge of managing players of varying ages all under 17, whose development and consistency vary greatly, he commended the progress of Moroccan football in recent years, especially on the women’s side, as well as the strong support from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
“The Federation has given us everything we need to prepare well,” he said. “We’re determined to represent Morocco with ambition and honor.”
The Women’s World Cup is more than just a sporting event for Morocco. It is part of a broader national effort to develop women’s football, inspire young athletes, and show that the country is ready to play a central role on the global football stage.
