The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has lodged an official protest with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over what it described as “influential refereeing errors” during the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, in which Morocco lost 3–2 to Nigeria.
Sources within the federation confirmed to Hesport that the FRMF sent a formal complaint accompanied by a DVD compiling several contentious refereeing decisions.
The federation claims these incidents directly altered the course of the match in favor of the Nigerian team, ultimately costing the Atlas Lionesses the continental title.
The match, played last Saturday at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was officiated by Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa, with Rwandan assistant referee Alice Umutesi and Senegalese assistant Tabara Mboge.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team included Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga, Leticia Viana from Eswatini, and Zambia’s Diana Chikotesha.
Among the key points of contention were a denied penalty for Morocco at a critical juncture in the match and a highly disputed penalty awarded to Nigeria. FRMF officials argue that the referee failed to apply the laws of the game consistently, particularly to Morocco’s disadvantage.
The high-stakes final ended 3–2 in Nigeria’s favor, sparking widespread controversy and debate over the quality and impartiality of officiating in one of African women’s football’s most important matches.
CAF has yet to publicly respond to the Moroccan federation’s complaint.
