A powerful new art installation has opened, aimed at bringing attention to the tragic loss of life among children due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The hope is to foster local support and raise awareness about this humanitarian crisis.
Msheireb Properties has launched a moving piece of art titled “Echo of Lost Innocence,” created by multidisciplinary artist Bachir Mohamad. This installation serves as a profound symbol of solidarity with Gaza’s children amidst the ongoing violence.
Displayed from September 16-24, the installation features over 15,000 small teddy bear sculptures, each representing a child’s life lost in the conflict that escalated on October 7, 2023. Mohamad emphasizes the importance of visual impact, stating that seeing such a staggering number of lives lost is far more impactful than simply hearing about it.
The latest report from the United Nations highlights the devastating toll of the conflict, noting that among the 41,020 Palestinian fatalities recorded since October 7, at least 10,627 are children. Local health authorities provide even grimmer numbers, with claims that over 16,000 children have been killed.
In a detailed report, the names, ages, and genders of those lost between October 7 and August 31 have been documented, leaving a heartbreaking reminder of the impact on young lives. Mohamad’s sculptures poignantly wear black shirts that declare, “I’m not just a number. I’m human. With an identity. With a homeland. I am Palestine.”
The opening of the installation was marked by attendance from various representatives of Msheireb Properties and Qatar Charity, signifying a unified effort towards a noble cause. Hafiz Ali Abdulla, the Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Msheireb Properties, stressed the importance of using public art to highlight significant social issues and to ensure the memories of those lost are not forgotten.
To further support the children of Gaza, each of the 15,000 teddy bears will be sold through Qatar Charity, with all proceeds directed to aid efforts in the region. Mohamad hopes this exhibition will instill a sense of urgency in supporting these vulnerable children.
Additionally, Msheireb Museums will present a group exhibition called ‘For the Children of Gaza,’ opening on September 26 at Bin Jelmood House. This exhibition aims to delve deeper into the themes presented in Mohamad’s work, featuring collaborations from local artists who advocate for action and support.
