Air Niugini (PX/ANG) made history by adding its first state-of-the-art Airbus A220-300 to its fleet, which arrived in Port Moresby brand new from the Airbus factory in Montréal on a long delivery flight that lasted four days.
Airbus aircraft returned to the Air Niugini fleet, with Papua New Guinea-registered aircraft, after 23 years, being the last two Airbus A310-300s, which served between the early 1990s and early 2000s (P2-ANA and P2-ANG). From 1984 to 1989, it operated an Airbus A300B4-203 with registration P2-ANG.
In addition, between December 2007 and May 2008, White’s Airbus A310-304 CS-TDI operated for Air Niugini, retaining its Portuguese registry and the airline’s livery.

The next day, at 08:55 local time, the A220 commenced its journey across the Pacific Ocean, taking off for Honolulu. This was a 5-hour and 58-minute flight, following to Nadi after a brief stopover in Honolulu, which lasted around 6 hours and 30 minutes, the longest leg of the journey.
At 13:46 local time on September 12th, the aircraft departed from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and landed at 18:16 local time on September 13th in the Fijian capital.
After making a low pass over the airport and part of the city, Air Niugini’s brand new Airbus A220-300 touched down in Port Moresby on September 15th at 10:30 local time, landing from Montréal via Vancouver, Honolulu, and Nadi. It was unveiled following its arrival, and the next day it started operating test flights around Papua New Guinea, as you can see through our data.

The airline entered into a lease agreement with US lessor Azorra for the addition of three Airbus A220-300s, with P2-PGA being the first of these three. Furthermore, in May 2025, Air Niugini expanded its initial order with Airbus for eight Airbus A220s, announcing the acquisition of two additional Airbus A220-100s. Air Niugini currently plans to have three Airbus A220-300 and eight Airbus A220-100.
These Airbus A220s will be incorporated with the aim of modernizing the fleet, which currently consists of a variety of aircraft, including Boeing, Dash, and Fokker models.

As per Air Niugini, its Airbus A220-100 and Airbus A220-300 aircraft will be based at Jackson International Airport in Port Moresby, offering domestic flights in Papua New Guinea. Port Moresby – Lae will be the main route for Air Niugini’s A220s, with almost a daily flight, and they will also operate to Kavieng and Lorengau from the country’s capital.
