Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said that Morocco and Spain are currently experiencing their “best phase ever” in bilateral relations.
Speaking at a press conference in Madrid following talks with his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, Bourita highlighted that the momentum initiated by the April 2022 meeting between King Mohammed VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has laid the foundation for a pragmatic and effective partnership.
He emphasized the unprecedented positive climate between the two nations, noting that economic, security, and cultural actors in both countries are working together with mutual trust and shared political will to strengthen a multidimensional strategic alliance.
Bourita underlined that this dynamic benefits not only bilateral ties but also the broader Mediterranean and regional landscape, positioning the Morocco-Spain rapprochement as a key contributor to resolving longstanding challenges.
The 2022 joint declaration, he said, has led to concrete outcomes: over 10 ministerial visits in the past year, the dismantling of more than 210 irregular migration networks, and joint security operations now considered a regional and global model.
On the economic front, Spain has become Morocco’s top trading partner, while Morocco is now Spain’s largest trading partner outside the EU—testament to deep mutual interests.
Regarding the Sahara, Bourita reaffirmed that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative remains “the only serious and credible solution.” He stressed that Spain’s support for the plan aligns with a growing international consensus, now backed by 22 European countries and several UN Security Council members.
“Those clinging to outdated positions don’t seek a solutionthey want to maintain the status quo,” he said. He concluded by urging a practical approach: “It’s easy to theorize from Madrid or Stockholm, but those who’ve endured over 50 years in inhumane conditions in the camps cannot be asked to wait another 50. The time has come to prioritize solutions over slogans.”
