Once overshadowed by Morocco’s northern coastal cities, Agadir is quickly reclaiming its place as one of the country’s most popular summer destinations, thanks to a steady investment in tourism infrastructure and a growing appeal among both domestic and international visitors.
Local officials and tourism stakeholders say the southern city’s rise mirrors broader shifts in national travel trends, particularly as cities in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region experience mounting pressure from overcrowding during the summer months. Agadir is increasingly seen as a preferred alternative, offering relief from congestion and a fresh mix of coastal and mountain attractions.
“This new positioning is not a coincidence,” said Hassan Marzouki, vice president of the Souss-Massa regional council in charge of traditional industries and social economy. “It is the natural outcome of a progressive development path that has focused on improving tourist accommodations, services and entertainment options. That has helped the city gradually regain its status among Morocco’s top summer destinations.”
Marzouki highlighted Agadir’s dual hospitality offerings — ranging from top-tier hotels to more affordable accommodations — which cater to a diverse range of tourists. He also pointed to the growing recognition of Agadir’s place in Moroccan tourism, even if, he noted, there has been a slight dip this year due to rising travel costs that prompted some Moroccans to vacation abroad.
However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges. Investment in new tourism infrastructure has stalled in recent years, limiting the city’s capacity to accommodate the seasonal influx. Issues like the unregulated management of public parking and beach umbrella rentals continue to frustrate some visitors, he said.
Despite the hurdles, Marzouki emphasized the strength of the city’s overall tourism offering, particularly with the addition of the Taghazout resort, which he described as a game-changer. “Taghazout provides a dual experience — seaside relaxation and mountain excursions — all within a single day,” he said. “It’s a strong offering that’s likely to become even stronger in the coming years.”
Agadir is still in the midst of a broader urban development plan that includes upgrades to public services and entertainment infrastructure, Marzouki added. “There is still plenty of room for growth so that Agadir can welcome all types of visitors, regardless of their income levels.”
Civil society actor Rachid Fassih also pointed to the city’s growing popularity among Moroccans living abroad and local tourists alike, crediting enhanced infrastructure and a strong lineup of summer activities. He said Agadir and its surroundings now offer a viable option to ease the burden on Morocco’s northern beaches.
“The heavy traffic and crowding in the north has made Agadir an ideal destination for those looking to escape the chaos while still enjoying high-quality tourism services,” Fassih told Hespress. Still, he noted that Agadir itself is now experiencing increased traffic pressure due to surging demand across the region.
Both Fassih and Marzouki agreed that Taghazout and Agadir’s resorts play a pivotal role in drawing more visitors each year, and that new resorts may be developed in the near future as interest continues to climb.
The post-pandemic period has played a significant role in this shift, according to Fassih, who said the COVID-19 crisis pushed many Moroccans to rediscover coastal destinations within the country. “The summer holiday season is now a key opportunity for vacationers to enjoy Atlantic beach resorts, not just in Agadir, but in neighboring areas that were previously overlooked.”
