On Thursday, Algeria and Morocco opened their borders for the release of 32 Moroccan migrants who had been detained by Algerian authorities.
The group, including two women, were held for attempted illegal migration and were released after serving their time in Algerian prisons.
This operation, which took place at the Jouj Bghal border crossing near Oujda, saw the transfer of the detainees from Algeria to Morocco.
The Moroccan Association for the Assistance of Migrants in Difficult Situations in Oujda confirmed the release in a statement.
According to the association, the detainees had completed their prison sentences in Algeria before being handed over to Moroccan authorities.
But the transfer was not without complications. While the official list of detainees numbered 36, four individuals were excluded from the release.
These four had not paid the fines imposed on them, even though they had already served their sentences.
The fines were a result of charges related to their attempted migration, and despite being free for over two months, they were returned to administrative detention.
Over the years, there have been various instances where migrants were detained by Algerian authorities under similar circumstances.
The association said there are ongoing struggles to repatriate hundreds of other detained migrants due to procedural and logistical challenges.
Efforts are being coordinated between Moroccan and Algerian authorities, with support from consulates in Algiers, Oran, and Tlemcen.
Despite these efforts, there are still over 480 active cases involving detained migrants, including six confirmed deaths — two of which are young women from eastern Morocco.
Families of the deceased continue to await the return of their loved ones’ remains.
The closed border, a consequence of the diplomatic freeze between the two nations, has inflicted immense hardship on families on both sides.
The lack of official communication channels, according to the association, makes it extremely difficult to obtain information and resolve cases, leaving families desperate for answers about missing loved ones.
