Algeria’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday summoned the acting head of France’s embassy in Algiers following the broadcast of a documentary on French public television channel France 2 that it described as a “clear attack” on the Algerian state, its institutions and national symbols.
In a statement, the ministry said the decision came in response to what it called a program falsely presented as a documentary but which it described as a compilation of “lies and fabrications” containing “deep insults and unjustified provocations.”
The ministry said the French diplomat was informed of the seriousness of the situation, stressing what it called the responsibility of a French public service broadcaster in carrying out what it termed an overt attack on Algeria. It argued that such a broadcast could not have taken place without either the complicity or, at minimum, the approval of the public authority overseeing the channel.
The statement also criticized what it described as the involvement of the French Embassy in Algiers, as well as the personal participation of the French ambassador, in promoting the program.
It said this involvement reinforced the perception that the campaign had received official backing from French authorities.
According to the Algerian Foreign Ministry, the actions of the French channel represent a new stage in what it called an escalation of hostile practices toward Algeria.
The ministry accused official French circles of overseeing these actions in an effort to keep Algerian-French relations in a state of constant tension.
France has not immediately responded publicly to the Algerian statement.
