Qatar Museums is being represented by an upcoming museum in the fair, just a month after announcing the partnership to bring it to the Middle East.
The partnership with Art Basel will mark a new chapter in Qatar’s “ongoing international cultural dialogue”, Qatar Museums Chairperson Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani said, on the backdrop of the Lusail Museum’s participation in the ongoing 2025 edition of the premier art show.
“Qatar’s pavilion at Art Basel offers a rich glimpse into the rich heritage and ambitious vision for the future, with leading institutions such as Lusail Museum contributing to the promotion of artistic and intellectual exchange,” the Qatar News Agency quoted Sheikha Al Mayassa as saying.
Set to be opened in 2029 at the Al Maha Island, Lusail Museums’ pavilion at the Art Basel 2025 features a few from its extensive collection of Orientalist paintings, often touted as the largest of its kind in the world.
“Qatar’s involvement in Art Basel is aimed at launching projects that foster global dialogue,” she added, in a panel discussion held on the sidelines of the fair.
The pavilion also includes a 3D render of the museum’s future building and offers a “forward-looking vision,” Sheikha Al Mayassa said.
Also on display are some of the most treasured Orientalist artworks, such as German artist Gustav Bauernfeind’s The Door of the Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Turkish artist Osman Hamdi Bey’s Green Mosque Front, French artist Jean-Leon Gerome’s The Harem in the Kiosk, as well as British artist John Frederick Lewis’ The Frank Camp in the Desert of Mount Sinai.
All completed in the late 19th century and now a part of the museum’s permanent collection, the artworks reflect Orientalist art traditions accurately, Lusail Museum’s Collections Head Elina Nuitinen told the QNA. They do so by highlighting Islamic figures, buildings and daily customs with “spirit of respect and artistic precision”, she added.
Turkish artist Bey’s An Old Man Before the Graves of Two Children, completed in 1903 and currently loaned from France’s Musée d’Orsay, is also a part of the pavilion.
Lusail Museum is one of more than 280 leading art galleries participating in the premier art event that aims to bring together more than 4000 international artists until June 22.
Art Basel comes to Qatar
Qatar Museums’ participation in the annual fair comes just a month after it announced a landmark agreement to bring the premier event to Qatar.
The move, Sheikha Al Mayassa hailed, is the execution of the country’s vision to bring “the world’s most prominent contemporary art fair to the region,” according to the QNA report.
In partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, a commercial enterprise focusing on cultural assets, Qatar Museums will be hosting Art Basel in the country starting February 2026.
Doha will be the famed contemporary art fair’s fifth destination, following its pre-existing events in Basel, Paris, Hong Kong and Miami.
“This partnership builds upon Qatar’s singular cultural vision and amplifies Art Basel’s unifying power to create new opportunities for the production, dissemination and discovery of art,” said a joint statement released by the three entities announcing the partnership in May.
Qatar Airways, the national carrier, was also announced as the fair’s global partner and will support all of its annual exhibitions.
Qatar Museum’s ongoing initiatives include the creation of the future Art Mill Museum and the establishment of a permanent Qatar Pavilion in the Giardini de la Biennale di Venezia, in addition to Art Basel and the development of Lusail Museum.
