Following a brief stint with Al Gharafa, Madibo joins Al Wakrah on loan as the club rebuilds after a disappointing season.
Qatar national team member Assim Madibo has joined Al Wakrah on loan from Al Duhail, continuing the midfielder’s volatile spell in the Qatar Stars League.
The 28-year-old midfielder joined Al Wakrah’s training camp in Spain and was a part of Al Wakrah’s squad against Gibraltar’s Europa FC just hours after the club made the move official.
“The goal this season is to win a title and go far in the league, competing in every tournament we can,” he said in a video posted on X after the announcement.
“It’s going to be a tough one, but with your backing and encouragement, we’ll hopefully bring you joy,” he added, addressing the Al Wakrah fans.
Neither Al Duhail nor Al Wakrah detailed on the duration of the loan period.
His move to Al Wakrah continues a streak of frequent club switches, despite having been with Al Duhail from 2016.
Madibo most recently played for Al Gharafa and was a part of the squad that ended the club’s 13-year wait for an Amir Cup title.
He had joined the side in 2024 as part of a swap deal, which included three Al Duhail players moving to Al Gharafa in exchange for Homam Ahmed. Madibo, Rabh Boussafi and veteran striker Mohammed Muntari were a part of the bundled deal.
However, it now appears that Madibo’s move to Al Gharafa was a loan deal, following Al Duhail’s announcement on Sunday.
The defensive midfielder had already spent half a season on loan in Al Gharafa in 2018 and returned to Al Duhail.
In addition to Qatar’s Aspire Academy, Madibo was a part of French club AJ Auxerre’s youth setup in his early years. More stints in Europe followed as he made his professional debut with Austria’s LASK Linz in 2015 and then moved to Spain’s Cultural Leonesa, which maintains close ties with Aspire.
His last spell in Europe was with the Qatar-owned Belgian side KAS Eupen in 2017, on loan from Al Duhail’s predecessors Lekhwiya SC.
Seen as a stellar presence in the national team setup, Madibo was a key part of Felix Sanchez’s 2019 Asian Cup-winning squad and later went on to represent Qatar at the 2022 World Cup. He has made 53 appearances for Al Annabi so far.
The defensive midfielder will look to finally find some stability in Al Wakrah, which he described as “home” upon the official announcement.
“Al Wakrah is the home where I started my football career, and I’m honestly very excited to be back,” he said in the video posted on X.
“When my family and friends heard the news, they were excited. They know how much I love Al Wakrah and that it’s the home where I was raised. They gave me their full support. I hope I can make them proud, too.”
Madibo is the latest move in Al Wakrah’s efforts to improve their disappointing 2024/25 campaign which saw them crash out of the AFC Champions League Two early and finish eighth in the Qatar Stars League table.
The club has already secured the services of Brazilian defender Lucas Verissimo and Mohamed Aiash on loan from Al Duhail, as well as Spanish striker Raul de Tomas from Rayo Vallecano.
Al Wakrah will begin their season facing Al Arabi on August 15, under the tutelage of new head coach Vicente Moreno.
