Morocco reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the last surviving nation from Group C after a 3–0 win over Canada. The Atlas Lions now stand alone after every other Group C representative has been eliminated from the World Cup.
Group C emerged as one of the tournament’s most competitive sections, featuring football giants Brazil alongside Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti. Brazil topped the group while Morocco advanced as runners-up after remaining unbeaten in the group stage.
Scotland’s World Cup journey ended with a 3–0 defeat to Brazil on June 24, finishing third in Group C and missing out on the knockout stage. Haiti was eliminated after a 4–2 loss to Morocco on the same day, finishing fourth in the group. Their exits left Brazil and Morocco as the two teams advancing to the Round of 32.
However, the knockout rounds produced unexpected twists. Brazil, the five-time world champions, were eliminated in the Round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Norway on July 5, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals.
Morocco began the knockout stage with a penalty-shootout victory over the Netherlands after the match ended 1–1 following extra time, eliminating the Netherlands from the tournament.
After overcoming the Netherlands, the Atlas Lions produced a commanding performance against co-host Canada. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal in stoppage time.
Four years after becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal, the Atlas Lions reinforced their status among world football’s elite by reaching the quarterfinals for a second consecutive tournament.
Morocco will face France in the quarter-finals on July 9, with a place in the semifinals at stake.
