London-listed Critical Mineral Resources says new drilling at its Agadir Melloul copper project in Morocco has returned strong results, bringing the company closer to publishing its first official estimate of how much copper the site contains later this year, the mining company said in a statement issued Wednesday.
The company’s latest drilling campaign found several copper-rich zones relatively close to the surface, including five meters grading 1.20% copper, 3.7 meters grading 1.76% copper, and seven meters grading 1.06% copper. The results suggest the copper is both concentrated and relatively shallow, which usually makes extraction easier and cheaper than in deep underground deposits.
The company said the mineral deposits are also thicker than initially expected, averaging around five meters in some areas. So far, however, only a very small part of the total land package has been drilled (less than 3%), meaning the full size of the deposit is still unknown.
Critical Mineral Resources believes Agadir Melloul may have around 25 million tons of mineralized material. To move faster, the company has increased drilling activity on site and says it is now completing more than 1,000 meters of drilling every month.
Its goal is to release a first internationally recognized mineral resource estimate in the third quarter of 2026, followed by technical studies to determine whether the copper can be mined commercially.
The project is one of a growing number of copper exploration ventures gaining momentum in Morocco, as foreign mining companies turn to the Kingdom in search of metals needed for electric vehicles, power grids, and renewable energy technologies.
