The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) reaffirmed its commitment on Wednesday to supporting Morocco in building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable infrastructure ahead of its co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
During the meeting under the theme “World Cup 2030, Climate of the World,” held at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, Mark Bowman, EBRD Vice President, welcomed Morocco’s ambition to co-host the tournament with Spain and Portugal while upholding high standards of governance, sustainability, and inclusivity.
Bowman said the World Cup aligns closely with the EBRD’s strategic priorities, noting the bank’s readiness to act as a financial and strategic partner.
The vice president warned about the growing impact of climate change on key infrastructure systems such as energy, transport, water, and communications. He called for more flexible infrastructure planning and highlighted Agadir as a success story. Morocco’s Agadir became the first nationally to issue municipal bonds with EBRD support, as part of the bank’s Green Cities program.
Bowman also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, especially in economic empowerment among women and youth.
The VP commended Morocco’s efforts, including the National Agency for Strategic State Asset Management and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, for implementing a new state asset policy adopted in December 2024. The policy strengthens transparency and improves the performance of public enterprises.
The EBRD has already invested more than EUR 5 billion in Morocco across various areas and provided technical experience, policy dialogue, and innovative financial tools to support infrastructure development focused on climate resilience and community needs.
