A new report by Brazilian analysis firm CPG says Morocco has transformed sardines into one of the pillars of its national economy, exporting more than 15,000 tonnes a year and dominating the global canned fish market.
The report argues that few countries have managed to turn a single natural resource into an economic backbone as effectively as Morocco has done with sardines. Drawing on international data and sector studies, CPG says Morocco supplies the largest share of processed sardines worldwide, exporting to markets ranging from the European Union to Asia and the Middle East.
According to the firm, the foundation of this dominance is geographic. Morocco’s Atlantic coastline sits on one of the world’s richest marine upwelling systems, where deep nutrient rich waters rise to the surface, supporting large concentrations of plankton and, in turn, sardines. This natural advantage has allowed Morocco to develop a fishing industry based on scientific management, seasonal controls and sustainability measures.
Industrial capacity is described as the other decisive factor. Morocco hosts dozens of processing plants supplying strict markets such as Spain, France, Italy, Japan and China. The sector employs hundreds of thousands directly and indirectly and drives the economies of coastal cities including Agadir, Essaouira, Safi and Laayoune.
While some countries prioritize fresh or frozen fish, Morocco has focused on canning, a higher value segment with greater stability and longer export life. In several coastal areas, the industry accounts for more than half of local industrial activity and is a major employer of women.
CPG says state investment in fleet modernization, certification and traceability systems has strengthened Morocco position. By controlling the entire chain from fishing to packaging, the country has built a vertically integrated model that rivals are unlikely to challenge in the short term.
