- 125 years in the Valencian Community
Iberdrola’s chief executive, Ignacio Galán, together with Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, president of the Valencian Regional Government, has presented the results of the ‘Plan il·lumina’, aimed at the restoration, modernisation and reinforcement of the Valencian electricity grid damaged by the DANA.
Over 2,000 million in investment
The work involved in rebuilding the infrastructure damaged by the severe weather event has required an investment of 100 million euros and has involved more than a thousand professionals.
The work carried out by Iberdrola as part of the Plan il·lumina has included the refurbishment of 20 substations, the restoration of more than 108,000 smart meters, the renovation of 940 transformer stations and the reconstruction of 460 electricity pylons damaged by the DANA.
In addition to this emergency investment, Iberdrola will invest a further 2,000 million euros in the maintenance and improvement of the grids in the Valencian Community over the next five years.
Official event
The results of Iberdrola’s ‘Plan il lumina’ were presented during an official event held at the company’s premises in Torrent, which served as the operations centre during the DANA and have been key to the subsequent reconstruction plan.
During his speech, the company’s chief executive, Ignacio Galán, reiterated Iberdrola’s commitment to developing robust networks that incorporate the latest digital technologies and help drive the electrification of the Valencian Community, its competitiveness and the creation of opportunities for society.
“Today we can say unequivocally that we have laid the foundations for Valencia to have the best electricity infrastructure,” said Ignacio Galán, who took the opportunity to remember the victims of the disaster and to thank the company’s staff and those of its partner organisations for their work during the DANA emergency and in the subsequent Plan il·lumina.
“That is the legacy of the ‘Plan il·lumina’: to reaffirm our commitment to the Valencian Community, so that it can reap all the benefits of electrification in terms of energy security and self-sufficiency, competitiveness and sustainability,” concluded the chairman.
Social initiatives
In addition to the plan to restore the facilities, Iberdrola has gone a step further in its commitment to those affected by the DANA in the Valencian Community through various social initiatives.
These include projects such as the refurbishment of the Catarroja School for Agricultural Foremen, in collaboration with the Valencia Provincial Council, as well as the reconstruction of children’s playgrounds, improvements to the facilities at the Rosa Serrano School and the refurbishment, in collaboration with Paiporta Town Council, of the town’s municipal market.
Other initiatives undertaken by Iberdrola as part of its support for Valencian society following the DANA include the refurbishment of the Plaza de la Concordia in Loriguilla, in collaboration with the local council, and the installation of charging infrastructure for boats on the Albufera, in partnership with Valencia City Council and the Regional Government of Valencia.
Iberdrola’s social initiatives are complemented by various schemes to support those affected and provide psychosocial care, in partnership with organisations such as Nuevo Hogar Betania and the Red Cross.
The official event to present the results of the Plan il lumina also served to mark Iberdrola’s 125th anniversary and to highlight the company’s close ties with the Valencian Community.
This relationship began with the hydroelectric development of the Salto del Molinar on the River Júcar and has included milestones such as the roll-out of the country’s first smart grids in Castellón, the construction of power stations such as the one at Cofrentes, and the commissioning of pumped-storage facilities such as the one at Cortes-La Muela.
