Indra is moving forward with the modernisation of Colombia’s air surveillance network with the delivery of the first of the new radars it will install in the country. The contract, awarded by Aerocivil, the public entity that manages all air navigation services in the country, is worth more than €65 million and covers the renewal of more than 50% of the current radars.
It is the largest civil aeronautics contract ever signed in Colombia and Latin America, both in terms of volume and ambition, as it involves equipping seven new stations with the latest technology to ensure maximum safety, efficiency and sustainability of the civil aviation system and facilitate smoother air traffic management, contributing to greater punctuality.
The project covers the planning, design, installation, commissioning and warranty of the radar renewal and construction of sites throughout Colombia, which is a large country with a complex mountainous geography, notably the Andes mountain range.

Indra will deploy seven primary radars (one of them long-range), seven integrated MSSR mode S and ADS-B secondary radars and seven independent ADS-B radars to monitor aircraft movements. The systems will be dedicated to the efficient and safe operation of Colombia’s airspace and will feature the latest technologies to ensure the exchange of information during take-off and flight, en route and on approach to the country’s main airports.
The primary radars, with 3D functionality, apply the latest technologies to ensure surveillance at airports and on air routes and provide accurate information on aircraft positions, including flight altitude, even under the most extreme weather conditions, by capturing ground signals and natural or man-made interference. These will be supported by Indra’s MSSR mode S secondary radars, the most advanced on the market, with integrated ADS-B systems that automatically collect data in flight.
Globally, Indra’s technology is present in more than 11,000 air traffic installations and contributes to the safety of passengers who take a flight every day anywhere in the world, as its technology is behind these journeys at some point.
