Harold Dennis “Dickie” Bird, the iconic cricket umpire who became a household name across England and beyond, died peacefully at his home at the age of 92, according to a Yorkshire County Cricket Club press release on Tuesday.
Born on April 19, 1933, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, Bird played first-class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire but retired at 32 due to injury. He turned to umpiring, officiating his first county match in 1970.
Over the next decades, Bird officiated 66 Test matches, 69 men’s One Day Internationals, and three World Cup finals, earning admiration for his integrity, humor, and unmistakable style.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club, where Bird served as president from 2014 until his death, called him “one of the greatest characters in Yorkshire’s history” and praised his loyalty and contributions. During his tenure, the club won two County Championship titles.
Bird’s influence extended beyond cricket. He sold more than a million copies of his autobiography and appeared on the BBC’s “Desert Island Discs,” choosing the Wisden Almanack as his book of choice. His warmth, eccentricity, and dedication made him a national treasure.
Bird received an MBE in 1986 and an OBE in 2012 for his contributions to cricket. Yorkshire County Cricket Club said his legacy of sportsmanship, humility, and joy will be remembered by generations of fans, players, and colleagues.
“Dickie Bird will be truly missed by all at the club,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.”
