Mawaqif parking Abu Dhabi rules quietly differ from Dubai’s: different zones, a different SMS number, and a different free day. Mawaqif, the capital’s paid parking system run by Q Mobility under Abu Dhabi Mobility, covers most kerbside parking on the island, and it is easy once you can read the kerb paint.
Here is the complete 2026 picture, checked against the official pages. For a live answer on whether you need to pay right now, our Is parking free right now? tool covers Abu Dhabi alongside the other six emirates.
The two zones, told apart by kerb paint
Standard zones, black and turquoise kerb. AED 2 per hour, capped at AED 15 for a full day, maximum stay 24 hours. This is most of the city.
Premium zones, white and turquoise kerb. AED 3 per hour, maximum stay four hours, and no daily cap. These sit on the busiest commercial stretches where turnover matters.
A detail most guides get wrong: the official colour is turquoise, not blue. On the street you will see the teal-striped kerbs from a hundred metres.
When you pay, and when you do not
Paid hours run 8am to midnight, Monday to Saturday. Parking is free on Sundays and public holidays in both zone types. If your mental model still says “free on Friday”, update it: that ended with the UAE weekend change, and it is the single most common mistake Dubai visitors make in the capital.
Two exceptions cut the other way. Mawaqif’s multi-storey car parks charge around the clock, every day, holidays included, at AED 2 an hour or AED 15 a day. And during Ramadan the hours shift by annual announcement; in 2026 they ran 9am to 6pm and again 9pm to 2am, with the iftar window free, so late-night parking was chargeable in Ramadan even though midnight is normally the cut-off.
Holiday free days are confirmed per event too: for Eid Al Adha 2026 parking was free from 25 to 29 May, with charges back on the Saturday.
Paying: the 3009 SMS and the Darb app
The SMS habit transfers from Dubai, just with a different number and format. Text to 3009:
AUH5 12345 S 1
That is plate source and category, plate number, zone letter (S standard, P premium), and hours. A Dubai-plated car starts the message with DXB instead. You get a reminder shortly before expiry; reply with E to extend.
Everything else has consolidated into the Darb app, Abu Dhabi’s combined toll and parking app, which took over from the retired m-Mawaqif wallet. TAMM, the payment machines and the rechargeable Mawaqif card round out the options. There is no need for coins in 2026, though the machines still take them.
Resident permits: protecting your own street
If you live inside a Mawaqif area, the turquoise-marked resident zones near your building are claimable. A resident permit makes your zone free for your car from 9pm to 8am, which is exactly when the overnight squeeze happens; outside those hours normal tariffs apply.
For expatriate residents the first vehicle costs AED 800 a year and a second AED 1,200; UAE nationals pay nothing, with up to four permits for apartment households. You apply through TAMM or Darb with your tenancy contract or title deed, Mulkiya and Emirates ID, and issuance can take up to 14 business days, so do not leave it until the day you move in.
The fines, and how to think about them
Mawaqif fines run from AED 100 to AED 1,000 depending on the offence. The lines worth memorising: around AED 200 for parking without a valid session, AED 100 for overstaying one, AED 500 for blocking other vehicles, and AED 1,000 for misusing a People of Determination bay. Q Mobility’s own FAQ notes a 25 per cent reduction for fines settled within 60 days. Fines land against the plate, so rental drivers see them appear on the rental company’s statement with an admin fee on top; the same logic we cover in how rental fines work in the UAE applies here.
What changed recently
Mawaqif is expanding rather than sitting still. In mid-2025 it activated new paid zones around Eastern Mangroves, the Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street parks and Al Qurm Plaza, and began piloting camera-based smart parking that logs your stay automatically in those areas. Expect the paid map to keep growing; when in doubt, look for the kerb paint or check the tool before you walk away from the car.
Visiting from Dubai: the two-minute version
- Sundays free, not Fridays.
- Text 3009, not the Dubai number, and start with DXB for your plate.
- Premium (white and turquoise) means four hours maximum, no daily rate.
- Multi-storey car parks are never free.
- Fines follow the plate home to your rental company.
