Mohamed Ouahbi has been appointed head coach of Morocco’s team, replacing Walid Regragui and bringing to an end his remarkable tenure with the Atlas Lions.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) held a ceremony on Thursday to celebrate Regragui’s achievements and impact on Moroccan football.
Ouahbi led Morocco’s under-20 team to the FIFA U-20 World Cup title earlier this year, the country’s first victory in the tournament.
Regragui had been at the helm of the national team for about three and a half years, guiding Morocco to the semifinal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the best performance ever achieved by an African or Arab nation in the competition.
Regragui’s success with the national team earned him several individual accolades, including the Best Coach in Africa award at the 2023 CAF Awards. The World Cup run also placed him among the most recognized national team coaches globally.
However, Regragui was criticized after Morocco lost to Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on January 18, which was hosted in Morocco.
