More than three-quarters of Moroccan households say their standard of living has deteriorated over the past year, while a majority expect unemployment to rise and food prices to remain high, according to new figures released by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
Morocco’s Household Confidence Index fell to 60.1 points in the second quarter of 2026, down from 64.4 points in the previous quarter. Despite the decline, the index remained above the 54.6 points recorded during the same period last year.
According to the survey, 78.3% of households said their living standards had worsened over the previous 12 months, compared with 16.5% who reported no change and 5.2% who said conditions had improved. The balance of opinion for this indicator fell further into negative territory, reaching minus 73.1 points.
Pessimism also extends to the year ahead. More than half of respondents, or 51%, expect living standards to deteriorate further over the next 12 months, while 39.7% believe conditions will remain unchanged. Only 9.3% anticipate an improvement.
Concerns about the labor market remain widespread. The survey found that 57.2% of households expect unemployment to increase in the coming year, compared with 18.4% who believe it will decline. Another 24.4% expect little change.
Consumer confidence remains weak, with 65.3% of households saying now is not a favorable time to purchase durable goods such as furniture and household appliances. By contrast, only 14.7% considered current conditions suitable for making major purchases.
While 58.7% of households reported that their income is sufficient to cover expenses, 38.7% said they have had to draw on savings or take on debt to make ends meet. Only 2.6% said they were able to save part of their income.
Households were slightly less pessimistic about their own financial prospects. Nearly two-thirds, or 64.5%, expect their financial situation to remain unchanged over the next year, while 17.8% anticipate an improvement and 17.7% foresee a deterioration.
As a result, the balance of opinion regarding future household finances stood at 0.1 points, making it one of the few indicators to avoid falling into deeply negative territory.
Inflation continues to weigh heavily on consumer sentiment. The balance of opinion on food prices over the past year dropped to minus 97 points, reflecting the widespread perception that prices have continued to rise.
Expectations for the coming year remained similarly pessimistic, with the indicator standing at minus 75.2 points, suggesting that households expect little relief from rising grocery costs.
The Household Confidence Index is based on seven indicators measuring perceptions of living standards, employment, household finances and major purchases, providing one of the broadest assessments of consumer sentiment in Morocco.
