Moroccan director Nour-Eddine Lakhmari’s latest feature film, “Mira,” has been officially selected to compete in the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) in Estonia, one of only 15 “Category A” festivals recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), a prestigious group that also includes Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.
The film’s selection marks a significant milestone for Moroccan cinema, underscoring its growing international recognition and artistic depth.
“Mira” tells the story of a 13-year-old orphan girl growing up in a conservative village in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains. Struggling against restrictive traditions, Mira finds solace in nature and in the support of Lamia, her progressive-minded teacher, and her grandmother Zineb.
Describing his film, Lakhmari said: “How can you refuse to conform to the rules of a small, conservative Moroccan village and still soar freely? Mira dreams of liberation, imagining herself under the care of her father, who drowned at sea.
Her only refuge is the forest and the birds she frees from their cages, a metaphor for our society’s conservatism, intellectual stagnation, and physical constraints that bind freedom.”
Mira marks Lakhmari’s return to cinema after his 2018 feature “Burn Out.” The film continues his exploration of identity, individual struggle, and symbolic storytelling, offering a universal message of freedom and hope while reflecting on Morocco’s evolving social dynamics.
The film is distributed by Concept Mena Group, which is handling its promotion among both professionals and general audiences. International distributor Siham El Faidy described the selection as “a strategic milestone that highlights Lakhmari’s exceptional talent and reaffirms Morocco’s growing presence on the global film stage.”
