Moroccan tennis players Yasmine Kabbaj and Aya El Aouni were both eliminated in the first round of the 23rd Princess Lalla Meryem Tennis Grand Prix, currently taking place at the Union Sportive des Cheminots du Maroc Club in Rabat until May 24, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
Kabbaj put up a strong fight before narrowly losing to former world No. 11 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in a hard-fought three-set match: 7-5, 4-6, 5-7.
Meanwhile, Burundi’s Sada Nahimana defeated El Aouni, who entered the tournament through the qualifiers, in straight sets: 6-3, 6-2.
Despite her singles loss, El Aouni continues her campaign in the doubles competition. Partnered with fellow Moroccan Diae El Jardi, she will play in the quarterfinals against the duo of Britain’s Maia Lumsden and China’s Qianhui Tang.
The Moroccan pair advanced after defeating the team of Dutch player Lian Tran and Russian player Ekaterina Yashina in straight sets: 7-6 (3), 6-4.
