Morocco has approved more than 140 medical cannabis products and established a nationwide distribution network, but patient adoption remains limited despite the rapid development of the country’s legal cannabis industry, according to the head of the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities (ANRAC).
Speaking at Morocco’s first scientific conference dedicated to the therapeutic use of cannabis on Saturday in Casablanca, ANRAC Director General Mohamed El Guerrouj said the country now has “a ready framework and an available, regulated supply” of medical cannabis products.
The products are available through more than 600 authorized points of sale across the country.
The development is part of Morocco’s efforts to build a regulated cannabis industry after legalizing the cultivation, processing, and commercialization of cannabis for medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial purposes.
“The next stage now depends on scientific societies, prescribing physicians, and medical researchers to develop new therapeutic applications,” El Guerrouj said.
Health professionals attending the conference identified several areas where cannabis-based treatments could potentially complement existing therapies, including neurology, oncology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, pediatrics, and intensive care medicine, subject to scientific validation and regulatory approval.
The conference also produced several initiatives aimed at accelerating research and physician training.
Organizers announced the creation of a therapeutic cannabis research prize and a certification program for physicians that will be developed in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Casablanca at Hassan II University.
