The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed details of the draw ceremony for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place Monday at 7 p.m. local time at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat.
In a statement, CAF confirmed that Morocco, as the host nation, will automatically be placed as the top seed in Group A (A1), while defending champions Côte d’Ivoire will lead another group. The remaining teams have been divided into four pots based on FIFA’s rankings published on December 19, 2024.
The first pot includes Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Nigeria. The second pot features Cameroon, Mali, Tunisia, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burkina Faso. Teams in the third pot are Gabon, Angola, Zambia, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, and Benin, while the fourth pot includes Mozambique, Comoros, Tanzania, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.
CAF outlined the draw process, stating that Morocco’s position (A1) will be assigned first, followed by the fourth pot teams, which will be distributed sequentially to positions A4 through F4. The same process will then apply to teams in the third and second pots, filling positions A3–F3 and A2–F2, respectively. The remaining first pot teams, excluding Morocco, will be drawn last to occupy positions B1 through F1.
CAF also clarified the tournament format. The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 16.
The draw ceremony marks an important step toward the highly anticipated tournament, which Morocco will host for the first time since 1988.
