Morocco is no longer just a beneficiary of industrial cooperation among Global South nations but has become a strategic bridge linking Europe, the Arab world, and sub-Saharan Africa, according to a recent report from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The report says Morocco is involved in two key projects under the South-South and Triangular Industrial Cooperation (SSTIC) framework and is leading industrial cooperation through initiatives like the Country Partnership Program (PCP) and Cleantech Morocco, reinforcing its growing influence in Africa.
The report adds that Morocco plays a key role in green technology highlighting the Green Academy which hosted experts from six African nations—Burkina Faso, Ghana, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Mauritius.
Morocco has also played a crucial role in transferring green technology to countries like Senegal and Cambodia through Cleantech Morocco.
The report noted that Morocco is set to host the upcoming conference on “Industry 14.0 and Smart Manufacturing in Africa,” as a step towards cementing its leadership in industrial development.
While Africa hosts 41 out of 149 global industrial cooperation projects, Morocco stands out with its active participation, despite Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Egypt leading in the number of projects.
The report highlights that there’s a heavy reliance on outside funding and that projects are spread unevenly across different areas.
Right now, only 24 of the 54 African countries are part of SSTIC projects, with most of them happening in West and East Africa.
70% of these projects are about agriculture and energy, while areas like healthcare and digital tech still need more investment.
Funding is still a big challenge. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the only African country in the top contributors, giving a significant amount. Global donations add up to a large sum, with the European Union leading the way.
This shows a contradiction—while there’s an effort to become more self-sufficient, many projects still depend on outside funding.
