Moroccan musician, composer, and actor Abdelwahab Doukkali has died at the age of 85, closing a career that lasted more than five decades and helped shape modern Moroccan music.
Doukkali was born in Fez in 1941. He grew up in a cultural environment that encouraged his artistic interests from an early age.
He studied music, acting, and painting before launching his professional career in 1957, at a time when Moroccan music was still developing its modern identity.
He became known for combining Moroccan musical styles with classical Arabic lyrics and melodies rooted in Moroccan culture.
His songs gained popularity not only in Morocco but across the Arab world, while still keeping a distinctly Moroccan sound.
Among his best-known songs are “Marsoul Al Hob,” “Kan Ya Makan,” “Ma Ana Ila Bashar,” and “Souk Al Basharia.” His work remained widely listened to across generations and became part of Morocco’s musical archive.
Throughout his career, Doukkali stayed away from commercial trends and maintained a reputation for carefully selected artistic work.
He was also active in theater and cinema, appearing in Moroccan productions including “Al Hayat Kifah,” “Rimal Min Dahab,” and “Ayyam Shahrazad Al Jamila.”
Moroccan producer Mofid Sebaai said Doukkali was “a pioneer of modern Moroccan music” and described him as “a complete artist, an exceptional ambassador, and a human being before being an artist.”
Sebaai said he had recently met Doukkali to discuss a modern rearrangement of one of his songs. According to him, the singer reacted positively to the idea and closely followed developments in Moroccan and international music scenes.
Sebaai added that “there was no one in our generation who did not own an Abdelwahab Doukkali cassette,” referring to the singer’s popularity in Moroccan homes before the era of social media and streaming platforms.
Journalist and close friend Aziz Majdoub described the death as “a real tragedy” and said Doukkali’s passing came as a shock because he remained artistically active until the end of his life.
Majdoub said the singer had continued working on new artistic projects, documenting his career, and preparing concerts that he planned to perform soon.
He added that Moroccan and Arab music had lost “one of their most important symbols” and one of the artists who helped establish Moroccan identity within Arabic music.
Cultural activist Khalid Ben Mansour also said the death was sudden and painful. He explained that his last conversation with Doukkali was about a new artistic project being prepared with several close figures from the Moroccan arts scene.
Ben Mansour described Doukkali as “the dean of Moroccan music and one of the great figures of Arab music,” adding that he was also known internationally and that the Moroccan artistic scene had lost a major figure who would be difficult to replace.
Moroccan singer Samira Said paid tribute to Doukkali and called him “a giant.” She said his death represented the loss of an entire artistic memory and added that major artists continue to live on through their work and artistic legacy.
Samira Said also said she had known Doukkali since childhood and had shared several concerts with him during the early stages of her career in the Arab world. She said he was not only a major artist to her, but also part of her personal memories and artistic beginnings.
She added that Doukkali succeeded in creating a unique identity for Moroccan music and influenced entire generations through his voice, melodies, and stage presence.
Moroccan singer Asma Lamnawar also reacted to the news, saying that entire generations grew up listening to his music and learned from his work how songs can become part of a people’s shared memory.
She said his death was “not only an artistic loss” and stressed that his songs and voice would continue to remain present for Moroccans over time.
During his career, Doukkali received several international awards and honors. In 1991, he was named Arab Personality of the Year by the BBC in London.
In 1996, he won the title of Best Musical Creator at the Cairo International Song Festival. He also received honors from France and the Vatican, and in 2013 he was awarded Morocco’s Order of National Merit at the rank of Commander.
