The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a EUR 270 million loan to Morocco to help finance a nationwide program to modernize and expand airport infrastructure, the bank said.
The initiative will upgrade major airports, bolster air navigation systems, and improve safety and security operations as Morocco prepares for rising passenger traffic as it co-hosts the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The program allocates funds to new security equipment, automated baggage-handling systems, and mobility improvements to ease passenger flow. AfDB country manager Achraf Hassan Tarsim said the project will help Morocco’s strategy to boost tourism and logistics capacity ahead of the tournament.
Morocco plans to modernize the airports of Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fes, including expanding terminals and adding 1.5 million square meters of new aircraft parking space, 7.6 kilometers of taxiways, and a new air-traffic control tower in Marrakech. AfDB Infrastructure Director Mike Salawou said the upgrades will help Morocco meet international service and safety standards.
The bank said the project is expected to create jobs during construction, with a focus on opportunities for women and young people. Airport capacity is projected to reach 14 million passengers in Marrakech, 5 million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier, and 3 million in Fes in 2030.
