Morocco sharply increased shipments of Atlantic mackerel to Russia in 2025, exporting 6,000 tonnes, up 2.6 times from a year earlier, according to calculations by the analytical centre of Russia’s Fish Union reported by TASS on Feb. 16.
The shift came as Russia’s traditional suppliers moved in different directions. Imports of Atlantic mackerel from the Faroe Islands fell 25 percent to 35,000 tonnes, while Morocco and Chile expanded deliveries.
Chile’s Atlantic mackerel shipments rose seven fold to 3,000 tonnes, and China increased exports of Pacific mackerel by 57 percent to 20,000 tonnes, the Fish Union figures showed.
Overall, Russia’s mackerel imports rose 2 percent by volume to 70,000 tonnes and 14 percent by value to $160 million in 2025, the data showed.
The Fish Union said retail demand strengthened, with frozen mackerel sales across eight major federal retail chains rising 15 percent by volume and 50 percent by value in 2025.
Russia also increased domestic catches, with Atlantic mackerel landings up 15 percent to 133,000 tonnes and Pacific mackerel up 60 percent to 8,600 tonnes, but imports remained in place to broaden supply and product range, TASS reported, citing the Fish Union’s analysis.
