Morocco is stepping up investment in sustainable, or “green,” tourism, which now attracts about one million visitors annually, officials said Wednesday.

Imad Barrakad, head of the Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development, said the effort is part of the kingdom’s national roadmap for the sector. Speaking at an international conference in Ifrane on the future of sustainable tourism, Barrakad noted growing interest from both foreign and domestic travelers.

“We are working to intensify investment and create new products capable of attracting more visitors,” Barrakad told Hespress AR. He highlighted a major initiative in the Ifrane National Park, which brings together public- and private-sector actors under a 640 million dirham ($63 million) budget to develop eco-tourism while boosting the region’s appeal.

Abderrahim Houmi, head of the National Agency for Water and Forests, stressed the importance of balancing development and conservation. “Around the world, there are examples that show we can promote protected areas while preserving them,” he said, adding that close cooperation with the Tourism Ministry is shaping “a Moroccan model” for sustainable tourism.

Officials said the plan aims to ensure classified and high-quality offerings for eco-tourists, while making Morocco a regional leader in sustainable travel.
