Morocco and Turkey are reportedly close to an agreement to reduce their trade deficit by boosting Moroccan agricultural exports, according to Hespress AR sources.
Members of the Moroccan-Turkish Joint Committee held a virtual meeting last week to review trade flows and explore ways to expand Morocco’s agricultural exports to Turkey.
Sources said the discussion was productive, with both sides exchanging data on Turkey’s agricultural imports from Morocco and other countries. Morocco shared detailed information on its exports and expressed interest in expanding shipments, with Ankara expected to respond in the coming week.
Turkey reportedly indicated openness to importing Moroccan agricultural products as a unilateral step to help rebalance trade, which currently favors Ankara.
Morocco aims to finalize the issue ahead of the Moroccan-Turkish business summit scheduled for late November, which Rabat hopes will mark the launch of agreed-upon agricultural export operations.
Sources said no official list of export products has been finalized, though sugar is among the main commodities under consideration. The Moroccan Confederation of Agriculture and Rural Development (COMADER) is participating in the process and will hold meetings with officials from the agriculture, trade, and industry ministries, as well as other stakeholders, before finalizing the list of products to be negotiated with Turkey.
The discussions take place under the framework of the Morocco-Turkey free trade agreement, in force since 2004. In 2024, Morocco imported goods worth MAD 39 billion from Turkey, while exports reached MAD 11.6 billion.
