Moroccan triathlete Mohamed El Khalil Binebine took part in the 22nd edition of the Zalaris Norseman Xtreme Triathlon organised in Eidfjord, Norway on Saturday.
Created in 2003 and well-regarded for its demanding format and unpredictable weather conditions, this long-distance triathlon event is now part of the XTRI World Championship.
The 2025 edition attracted more than 6,000 applicants from around 100 countries, with only 276 spots allocated by lottery or ranking.
The course included a 3.8 kilometer swim in the cold waters of Eidfjord Fjord, 180 kilometers of cycling with steep climbs across the Hardangervidda plateau, followed by a 42.2 kilometer marathon ending with the ascent of mount Gaustatoppen (1,880 m), for a total elevation gain of over 5,000 meters.
Selected among 276 athletes authorized to compete, Mohamed El Khalil Binebine was the only participant of Moroccan nationality. He finished the race in 14h 57 min 35 sec, earning him the “black shirt,” awarded to the first 160 competitors to finish the entire course within the allotted time.
This performance, carried out in challenging weather conditions – with an average air temperature of around 14°C in the morning and an estimated water temperature of around 12°C at the start – reflects his rigorous preparation and commitment to long-distance endurance disciplines.
“Going through such experience under Morocco’s colors was a huge honor,” Binebine said after the race, adding that “we don’t just run to finish, but to grow”.
Norwegian Kristian Grue won the race, clocking 9 h 45 min 20 sec, marking the third-best performance in Norseman history. In women’s race, Germany’s Julia Skala set a new record with a time of 11 h00 min 23 sec, improving on the previous record set in 2018 by sixteen minutes.
