Naima Samih one of the greatest icons of Moroccan music, was a unique talent whose voice, blending the rare sounds of the Atlas Mountains, carved her name into the heart of Moroccan music.
With a career spanning decades, she captivated generations with her distinctive musical legacy. One of the most celebrated voices in both Moroccan and Arab music, her passing left a deep void in the hearts of Moroccans. Naima Samih was truly a national treasure, a symbol of Moroccan art.
She grew up in Casablanca, in the vibrant Derb Sultan neighborhood, which was known for its cultural and sports activity during the 60s and 70s, and from which many notable figures in literature, sports, theater, and music emerged.
Naima left school after completing elementary education and pursued vocational training in hairdressing. She started her career as a stylist, opening her own salon. However, her true passion for music was soon realized when she participated in talent discovery programs on Moroccan radio and television. Her breakthrough came with the program Khamis al-Hadh, followed by Mawahib (Talents), where she gained early recognition for her talent.
Despite initial praise, her career almost ended due to her father’s objections to her pursuing a music career. It was only with the support of influential figures in the artistic and media world, who convinced her father of her talent and safety, that she was allowed to continue. Her father agreed, but only on the condition that she would stick to contemporary Moroccan music and work with respected lyricists and composers, always with dignity.
In the early 1970s, Naima Samih began collaborating with Morocco’s top composers and poets, which allowed her to further showcase her exceptional talent. She soon became known for her ability to blend traditional music with modern styles, gaining immense popularity both at home and abroad. Her music often addressed themes of love, emotion, and Moroccan traditions, reflecting the social and cultural changes occurring in the country.
From unforgettable hits like Yak A Jruhi, Jarit W Jarit, and Amri Billah, her songs have become milestones in the history of Moroccan music and a lasting cultural heritage. Naima Samih remained artistically relevant throughout her career, always innovating while staying true to her roots.
She wasn’t just an influential artist, but also an ambassador for Moroccan music worldwide. Her songs touched the hearts of many, offering deep insights into Moroccan society. She also achieved international recognition, notably performing at Paris’s Olympia in 1977, making her one of the few Arab artists to grace that stage, after Umm Kulthum and Fairuz.
Throughout her career, Naima enjoyed royal recognition, receiving special invitations to perform at national events and royal gatherings, where she won the admiration of King Hassan II. Her unique voice earned her the title of “the darling of the palace.”
In 2007, she was awarded Morocco’s National Order of Merit in recognition of her significant contributions to Moroccan music.
In her later years, Naima faced a serious illness and quietly retired from public life to focus on her health and spirituality. She spent her final years in seclusion, dedicating her time to worship and family.
Her last public appearance was in 2016 at the Women’s Voices Festival in Tetouan, where she performed a final concert, a heartfelt farewell to her fans.
With Naima Samih’s passing, Morocco lost one of its finest voices, but her legacy endures. Her songs, which reflect her deep emotional connection to her country and its people, will continue to resonate for generations to come.
