Nestlé has recalled specific batches of its SMA, BEBA, and NAN infant and follow-on formula products across several European countries after identifying a potential food safety risk linked to a bacterial toxin, Reuters reported.
The recall affects products sold in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Nestlé warned that the affected batches may contain cereulide, a toxin produced by certain strains of the Bacillus cereus bacterium, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.
The company said the recall, which began on a limited scale in December, was expanded after a quality issue was detected in an ingredient supplied by a third party. Nestlé has since tested all arachidonic acid oils and related oil blends used in the potentially affected infant nutrition products.
Britain’s Food Standards Agency warned that cereulide is highly heat-resistant and is not destroyed by boiling water or during formula preparation, meaning contaminated products could still pose a risk if consumed.
The issue was traced to one of Nestlé’s factories in the Netherlands, according to the company, which has published batch numbers for affected products and urged consumers not to use them. Nestlé said it is working with regulators to minimize supply disruptions.
