The Polisario Front has launched a sharp critique of Alexander Ivanko, head of the United Nations mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO), accusing him of leaking parts of a forthcoming report and favoring Morocco in the long-standing territorial dispute.
The allegations come days before the U.N. Security Council is scheduled to meet on April 14 to review the latest developments in the conflict.
Polisario, which seeks secession from Morocco, alleges that Ivanko’s semi-annual report includes biased field data and constitutes “a service to Rabat’s agenda.”
According to the militia’s media channels, the leaked contents of the report highlight Morocco’s cooperation with MINURSO while criticizing the Polisario for allegedly obstructing the mission’s operations in areas east of the security berm. These actions, the report details, have hindered the mission’s ability to monitor the 1991 ceasefire.
The report also reportedly reveals that MINURSO proposed a ceasefire for the duration of Ramadan, beginning on February 6.
Morocco responded positively, while the Polisario ignored the proposal. The MINURSO interprets this as further evidence of the parties’ differing commitments to the ceasefire, which the Polisario formally broke in 2020.
Additionally, the report notes Morocco’s increasing use of drone technology to defend its military positions against repeated attacks. It specifies that investigations concluded the airstrikes targeted military installations and equipment, not civilians.
U.N. Security Council members confirmed to Hespress AR that the April 14 session will include briefings from Staffan de Mistura, the Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Western Sahara, and from Ivanko. The specific content of their presentations has not been disclosed.
The Polisario’s media campaign appears to be aimed at influencing perceptions ahead of the Security Council session, which is expected to offer a critical assessment of the situation on the ground and may shape the future trajectory of the political process surrounding the Moroccan Sahara.
