The Polisario Front sharply criticized the new Morocco–European Union trade agreement extending preferential treatment to products from the southern provinces, calling it a “violation of European Court rulings” and an “affront to the will of the Sahrawi people.”
In a statement issued Saturday, the separatist group denounced the accord as concluded “behind the back of the legitimate representative,” using rhetoric long familiar in its narrative of victimhood.
Experts in international relations and law, cited by Hespress, said the Polisario’s reaction reveals “political disarray” following the European Court of Justice’s confirmation of the legality of EU–Morocco agreements.
They noted that the group’s discourse ignores the institutional and legal context within the EU and instead advances a purely political reading of judicial mechanisms.
Abdellah El Fergui, professor of international law at the International University of Rabat, said the Polisario’s statement lacks legal foundation since agreements under Article 218 of the EU Treaty are fully ratified by the European Parliament, giving them complete contractual legitimacy. He emphasized that the Polisario has no recognized legal status allowing it to contest such international accords, as it is not acknowledged as a sovereign entity.
El Fergui added that Morocco, as a sovereign state, has the legitimate right to manage its natural resources transparently and in consultation with its local population, a principle already recognized in several EU reports.
Political analyst Bousalham Aissat described the Polisario’s reaction as “a symptom of ongoing political defeat” after successive setbacks, particularly before the EU court. He stressed that Europe would not sign agreements prohibited by its judiciary, undermining the Polisario’s longstanding propaganda narrative.
Aissat added that Morocco continues to strengthen its international position through its autonomy initiative, widely regarded as the most credible and realistic path forward.
He underlined that the latest trade deal not only carries economic weight but also reinforces Morocco’s political and diplomatic standing, in line with King Mohammed VI’s assertion that “the Sahara is the lens through which Morocco views the world.”
