Morocco will host its first Russian Film Festival from June 18 to 21, organizers announced, marking a new cultural initiative aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries through cinema.
The festival, organized by ROSKINO with support from the Russian Ministry of Culture, will take place in Rabat and feature a selection of Russian films spanning drama, animation, action, science fiction and family entertainment.
According to organizers, the opening film will be “Aviator,” a screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Russian author Evgeny Vodolazkin. The film follows Innokenty Platonov, a man attempting to reconstruct his life and identity in a changed world.
Director Egor Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky described the project as one of the most challenging of his career and expressed enthusiasm about presenting it to Moroccan audiences.
The festival lineup also includes “August,” a war drama based on a novel by Vladimir Bogomolov; “The Dino Family,” an animated adventure about a family transported to the Mesozoic era; and “The Red Silk,” a Russian-Chinese espionage thriller set aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1927.
Other films scheduled for screening are “The Lefty,” a science-fiction crime story centered on a mysterious mechanical flea discovered in an imperial palace; “The Man Who Laughs,” a comedy about an action-film star who uncontrollably laughs after suffering trauma; and “Don’t Mess with Baba Yaga,” a family fantasy film that has also been selected for Indonesia’s Balinale film festival.
Festival organizers said the event is intended to promote cultural exchange and expand cooperation between the Russian and Moroccan film industries while introducing Moroccan audiences to contemporary Russian cinema.
ROSKINO, a state-owned organization responsible for promoting Russian audiovisual content internationally, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024. The organization represents Russia’s film industry at international festivals and film markets around the world.
