Morocco’s state-run public broadcaster SNRT’s radio division has acknowledged karateka Saïd Oubaya and boxer Widad Bertal athlete and female athlete of the year, honoring the country’s top athletes of 2025 following a vote by 51 national and international media outlets, according to a press release.
The ceremony honored Moroccan athletes who achieved outstanding results in national, continental, and international competitions throughout the year.
Oubaya was named athlete of the year for his gold medal in the men’s -67 kg category at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China. Bertal earned female athlete of the year after claiming gold in the -54 kg division at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Serbia, Morocco’s first-ever title.
Oubaya said the award gives him extra motivation to chase new titles next season, while Bertal said it inspires her to aim higher, with the 2028 Olympic Games as her main goal.
Distance runner Soufiane El Bakkali earned second place among men after taking silver in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Judokas Hassan Doukkali and Achraf Moutii tied for third following their gold medals at the African Judo Championships in Côte d’Ivoire.
Among women, judoka Soumia Iraoui claimed second place after winning gold in the -52 kg category at the African Championships. Boxer Hasna Larti, a world bronze medalist, and Oumaima Belouarrat, who earned bronze in muay thai at the World Games, tied for third.
SNRT Radio’s sports department also honored several figures for their 2025 achievements, including Mohamed Ouahbi, coach of Morocco’s under-20 team that won the World Cup in Chile; Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, named African Footballer of the Year; and Ghizlane Chebbak, who took home the African Women’s Player of the Year award. The broadcaster also recognized Morocco’s A’ national team for its Arab Cup title at the FIFA-organized tournament in Qatar.
Adil Alaoui, head of sports at SNRT Radio, said the event is an annual celebration of Moroccan champions and their achievements, adding that he expects even stronger results from Moroccan athletes next year and is confident in the national football team at the Africa Cup of Nations.
