Spain has seen a massive 625% increase in imports of grain from Morocco in 2024 compared to 2023, with the value reaching 1.5 million euros, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Trade.
This surge in imports has led to a decrease in local prices due to increased supply. The “Unión de Uniones,” Spain’s second-largest agricultural union, reports that local farmers have had to lower grain prices by 45% since May 2022.
In addition to Moroccan grains, large quantities of Ukrainian grain have flooded the Spanish market, with imports reaching 8.4 million tons in 2023 and 6.5 million tons in the first half of 2024. The union claims that over half of Ukraine’s grain entering the EU is directed to Spain, causing a significant drop in local grain prices.
The rise in Moroccan grain imports from 240,000 kilograms in 2023 to 1.87 million kilograms in 2024, at a value increase of 625%, is putting pressure on local producers. This trend is compounded by concerns over the safety of Moroccan food imports, including strawberries and olives, which have been found to contain harmful substances.
