The Spanish tennis player Rafael Jódar won his first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) title in Marrakech on Sunday, defeating Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
The 19-year-old Spaniard controlled the match from start to finish and closed the week with a strong performance on clay, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
Jódar built momentum early in the match with aggressive baseline play and a powerful forehand that repeatedly put Trungelliti under pressure. He secured timely service breaks in both sets and never allowed his opponent to establish rhythm.
Trungelliti, 36, also competing in his first ATP final, struggled to match Jódar’s pace and consistency.
The victory caps a breakout week for Jódar, who dropped only one set during the tournament. In the semifinals, he limited Camilo Ugo Carabelli to just three games. In the final, he again dictated play with deep groundstrokes and quick court positioning.
Jódar rises sharply in the rankings with this title, moving from outside the top 900 a year ago to No. 57. The result puts him within reach of the top 50 and signals his rapid development on the ATP Tour, L’Équipe reported.
Jódar is the sixth Spanish player to win an ATP title before turning 20, joining a group that includes Carlos Moyá, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Tommy Robredo, Rafael Nadal, and Carlos Alcaraz. He also joins João Fonseca as one of the few players born in 2006 to capture an ATP trophy.
