Spain’s National Police in Malaga have intercepted nearly 1,600 kilograms of cannabis originating from Morocco, hidden in a truck disguised as carrying real oranges, according to several Spanish media outlets.
The drugs were packed in orange-colored plastic spheres carefully designed to resemble the fruit’s color and shape, allowing traffickers to evade roadside inspections.
Spanish media reported that this operation is considered one of the biggest drug trafficking busts so far this year in the province of Malaga.
The police raid took place near Vélez-Málaga. Spanish officers had been tracking a truck with a foreign license plate when they noticed a car with two occupants, also bearing a foreign plate, following it nervously and making suspicious maneuvers typical of criminal organization.
The car performed a series of evasive maneuvers and managed to flee when authorities attempted to stop it, but the truck was intercepted as it tried to take a motorway exit.
It was then escorted to a warehouse, where police unloaded numerous wooden crates filled with oranges, some real, others concealing balls of cannabis, weighing a total of 1,579 kilograms, as part of the operation dubbed Zidanne.
The truck’s driver and his assistant were arrested on the spot and, after appearing before a judge, have been placed in pre-trial detention.
