Tangier has officially joined UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network in the field of literature, becoming the first Moroccan city to receive this distinction. The announcement, made on October 30 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), was confirmed Monday by the Tangier City Council.
The municipality said the recognition honors Tangier’s long cultural legacy as a crossroads of creativity, diversity, and intellectual life. The designation is the result of an institutional project led by the mayor’s office, which documented the city’s literary heritage and mobilized local cultural partners.
The designation places Tangier among 53 literary cities and over 400 creative cities globally, opening new opportunities for cultural exchange, translation, publishing, and literary residencies.
