From art and music to urban debates and innovation, the Qatar–Argentina 2025 Year of Culture started with an aim to bring two continents together in dialogue and discovery.
From the ornate Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires to Doha’s state-of-the-art Qatar National Library, the Qatar-Argentina 2025 Year of Culture events continue to celebrate common themes of fostering cultural exchange and dialogues from across continents, disciplines, and generations.
Launched under Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative, the programme seeks to explore Argentina’s cultural dynamism while highlighting Qatar’s role as a global hub for dialogue and creativity.
It is also the first time Argentina has partnered with Qatar for a dedicated cultural year, marking a milestone in more than five decades of diplomatic ties.
Art and ideas on the global stage
The 2025 initiative opened with a landmark exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar, LATINOAMERICANO: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Malba and Eduardo F. Costantini Collections.
Presented in partnership with Buenos Aires’ Museo de Arte Latinoamericano (MALBA), it was the first large-scale survey of Latin American art in the wider West Asia and North Africa region.
The show drew thousands of visitors and was hailed as a critical success in the heart of Doha.
Literary exchange also took centre stage through Qatar Reads in Buenos Aires. Storytelling workshops, Arabic literature in Spanish, and a travelling exhibition of paintings by Qatari artist Wadha Al Athba brought the cultures closer.
Workshops for Doha Debates participants, conducted as part of the programme, also introduced students to the Islamic tradition of the Majlis, aiming to deepen cultural understanding and dialogues surrounding common grounds.
“Dialogue is at the heart of cultural exchange,” said Mohammed Al-Kuwari, Advisor on Latin America for Years of Culture.
“By drawing on traditions like the Majlis, we can create new spaces for young people to learn from one another and build bridges of understanding.”
Music as a cultural bridge
Music provided one of the programme’s most symbolic encounters when the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) made its Latin American debut at Teatro Colón, one of the world’s great opera houses.
Joined by Argentine bandoneon virtuoso Víctor Hugo Villena, QPO musicians performed Piazzolla’s Aconcagua alongside works by Ginastera and Qatari composer Dr Nasser Sahim.
The concert celebrated music’s universality by fusing the two countries’ local instruments in one of the most iconic venues in South America.
Debate and dialogue
In September, Doha Debates held its first town hall in Latin America at Usina del Arte, exploring the question: “How should we reinvent the city?”
Students from Argentina, Chile, and Qatar joined experts in debating issues from urban density to social inclusion.
“The future of cities cannot be built in isolation — it demands truth-seeking dialogue that bridges cultures, generations, and disciplines,” said Amjad Atallah, Managing Director of Doha Debates.
Colour on the streets
Street art is also a pillar for exchange during the programme. JEDARIART, Qatar Museums’ annual urban art programme, will bring Qatari artists to Buenos Aires in November, while Argentine muralist Animalitoland will travel to Doha in December to participate in the World Wide Walls festival.
“From walls to concert halls, these projects embody the spirit of cultural diplomacy,” said an organiser. “They show how art and creativity can unite communities across borders.”
Beyond the arts: Innovation and exchange
The Qatar-Argentina 2025 Year of Culture is not confined to museums and concert halls.
Earlier in 2025, Argentina was honoured as Guest Country at Project Qatar, with seven Argentine start-ups — from biotechnology to blockchain — connecting with Qatari investors to explore expansion opportunities.
Volunteer initiatives further added to the people-to-people exchange of the partnership.
The Qatar Museums International Volunteer Trip in Buenos Aires paired Qatari participants with local institutions to restore artefacts, run cultural workshops, and even share culinary traditions in a “Gastro-Diplomacy Day”.
In October, several Argentine companies and a high-level delegation will participate in Hospitality Qatar’s 10th anniversary event, highlighting innovation across biotech, food and beverage, and AI-driven technology.
Plenty more events, from film showcases to storytelling workshops, are set to be held in November and December, details for which can be accessed on Years of Culture’s website.
A legacy of exchange
Since its launch in 2012, Years of Culture has partnered with more than a dozen nations, from Japan and France to Morocco.
But the 2025 edition, focusing on Argentina and Chile, carries particular resonance, reflecting the enduring Arab influence in Latin America and the shared values of hospitality, resilience, and dialogue.
With over 700 events staged since the programme’s inception, the initiative continues to be a crucial part of Qatar’s cultural diplomacy efforts, while enriching partner nations.
As the Qatar-Argentina collaboration unfolds through exhibitions, debates, concerts, and culinary exchanges, an eye will be on stretching its legacy beyond 2025.
