The US House of Representatives approved on Thursday President Donald Trump’s massive tax and spending bill by a razor-thin 215-214 vote, raising concerns about the nation’s swelling debt, Reuters reported.
The vote capped two nights of marathon debate. All Democrats opposed the bill, with two Republicans joining them. One Republican voted “present.” Another missed the vote entirely after reportedly falling asleep.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, navigating a fragile 220-212 Republican majority, scrambled to secure support. He made last-minute changes to win over conservative and centrist holdouts.
The 1,100-page bill now moves to the Senate, where Republicans are expected to revise it in the coming weeks.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would add USD 3.8 trillion to the national debt over the next decade, to the federal government’s $36.2 trillion.
The legislation revives and expands many of the 2017 tax cuts from Trump’s first term. It eliminates green-energy incentives championed by former President Joe Biden and imposes stricter work requirements for food and healthcare assistance.
The bill also earmarks billions for immigration enforcement to deport up to a million people per year, and loosens restrictions on firearm silencers.
It introduces new tax breaks on tips and car loans and creates tax-free savings “Trump Accounts” for children. It also boosts military spending and raises the federal debt ceiling by USD 4 trillion, a move Republicans argue is necessary to avoid a default this summer.
The Senate, also controlled by Republicans, will now take up the bill. Significant revisions are expected before any final vote. Still, Thursday’s narrow House passage marks a major step forward in Trump’s effort to reshape the federal government’s tax and spending priorities.
