Turkish authorities ordered on Friday the detention of 21 individuals, including 17 referees and the chairperson of a Super Lig club, in connection with an alleged football betting scandal, state-owned Anadolu News Agency reported Friday.

So far, 18 of the 21 suspects have been taken into custody.

The arrests follow last week’s suspension of 149 referees and assistant referees by Türkiye’s Football Federation (TFF) after an investigation showed officials in the country’s professional leagues were betting on matches.

The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office said the 17 referees face charges of abuse of duty and manipulating match results. Others detained include a Super Lig club president, a former club owner, and a former association president. Another individual is being investigated for spreading misleading information on social media. The operation covered 12 cities across Türkiye.

The TFF’s separate disciplinary probe found that 371 of 571 active referees had betting accounts, with 152 actively placing bets. One referee reportedly placed 18,227 bets, while 42 others bet on more than 1,000 matches each. TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu described the situation as a “moral crisis in Turkish football.”
