French football legends Raphaël Varane and Robert Pirès said on Tuesday that Morocco is on the right track to host a successful 2030 FIFA World Cup. The two former World Cup winners, now tech entrepreneurs, commended the country’s preparation and infrastructure during their visit to GITEX Africa 2025 in Marrakech.
Speaking on the sidelines of the continent’s largest tech and startup event, Varane and Pirès said they were confident in Morocco’s vision for the tournament and its growing digital capabilities.
“The momentum here is real,” said Pirès. “Morocco has what it takes, and the impact of a World Cup goes beyond sport; it shapes future generations.”
The 1998 World Cup winner also spoke about the parallels between high-level football and the startup world. “Perseverance, respect, discipline, those are the values that guided me on the field, and they’re the same values I see driving innovation today,” Pirès said.
Varane, who won the World Cup with France in 2018, echoed those sentiments. He highlighted the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people, both in football and business. “Investing in tech isn’t a career switch, it’s a natural next step. It’s about structure and impact,” he said.
Both men also voiced admiration for Africa’s emerging tech scene and commended the organization of the third edition of GITEX Africa.
GITEX Africa 2025’s week-long event features panels, creative industry showcases, and high-impact networking forums. The event is intended to strengthen partnerships between governments, investors, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders.
