Google has begun rolling out a long awaited feature allowing users to change their @gmail.com email address without creating a new account, more than two decades after the launch of Gmail in 2004.
Until now, Gmail addresses were permanent. Users who chose an outdated or unprofessional username had no option but to keep it, aside from changing the display name or adding secondary addresses. The lack of this feature stood in contrast to rival services such as Outlook, which have long allowed address changes.
According to updated Google help documentation, users can now modify their primary Gmail address to a new @gmail.com address. The original address will remain active as a permanent alias, meaning emails sent to the old address will still be delivered and can still be used for sign in.
Google has imposed limits to prevent abuse. Each account can change its address up to three times, with a 12 month waiting period between changes. A maximum of four addresses, including aliases, can be linked to one account.
The feature is being deployed gradually worldwide. Users who do not yet see the option are advised to wait, as Google says availability will expand soon.
