Average daily exports of Russian natural gas to Europe via the TurkStream pipeline rose by 22% in March compared with the same month last year, reaching 55 million cubic meters, according to Reuters calculations released Wednesday.

The increase comes as global energy markets face mounting pressure following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to most shipping amid the war involving Iran. The waterway typically carries around 20% of global oil, refined products and liquefied natural gas, making disruptions a major risk for energy supply.

Turkey has become the only transit route for Russian gas to Europe after Ukraine chose not to renew a five-year transit agreement with Moscow that expired in January 2025.

Data based on the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas showed that total gas flows through TurkStream reached 1.7 billion cubic meters in March, up from 1.4 billion cubic meters a year earlier. Supplies have remained relatively stable since February.

In the first quarter of 2026, exports through the pipeline rose by 11% year-on-year to about 5 billion cubic meters.

Gazprom has not published monthly statistics since early 2023.

Reuters calculations indicate that the company’s total gas exports to Europe fell by 44% last year to 18 billion cubic meters, the lowest level since the mid-1970s, following the shutdown of the Ukrainian transit route.

By comparison, Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe peaked at around 180 billion cubic meters annually between 2018 and 2019.
